The suspension of your 4\u00d74 or off-road vehicle is one of the most decisive factors for ride comfort, handling and the height of your lift kit. A standard suspension system is designed for average use on normal roads. As soon as you regularly drive offroad, fit a lift kit or heavily load your vehicle with cargo or a trailer, the standard suspension soon runs into its limits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coilover offers a direct solution in those situations: a combined spring and shock absorber in an adjustable housing, fully tuned to the weight and use of your vehicle. In this article, we explain what a coilover does, when an upgrade makes sense and what to look out for when choosing one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a coilover and how does it work?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A coilover, derived from coil-over-shock, is a construction in which a coil spring is wrapped directly around the shock absorber. This gives a compact and responsive suspension system where spring and damper work together as one. Unlike a separate spring combined with a separate shock absorber, a coilover offers more control over suspension travel, ride height and damping force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most coilovers for off-road use are adjustable in ride height. By turning the spring plate up or down, you adjust the height of the vehicle without changing the spring rate. High-end models also have adjustable damping, so you can choose between a smoother setting for everyday use and a stiffer setting for technical terrain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standard suspension vs coilover: what's the difference?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A standard suspension system is designed for the vehicle's factory configuration: a certain weight, ride height and average road surface. This works fine for everyday use, but has obvious limitations once the situation changes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a lift kit of more than five centimetres, the geometry of the suspension angles changes. The standard shock absorbers are then no longer in the optimum working range, leading to accelerated wear, reduced ride comfort and less control on uneven surfaces. A coilover specifically tuned to the desired ride height solves this problem immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with extra weight, due to a roof tent, a winch bumper, a winch or heavy cargo in the cargo box, the standard suspension sags faster than desired. A heavier-sprung coilover, tuned to the actual total weight of the vehicle, keeps the ride height stable and prevents the vehicle from sagging in the rear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When does a coilover upgrade make sense?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A coilover is the right choice in a couple of specific situations. The first is when you fit a lift kit of more than five centimetres. At that point, the standard shock absorbers are no longer suitable for the changed suspension geometry and a longer, customised coilover is necessary for safe and comfortable driving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second situation is when your vehicle is structurally heavier than the factory configuration, for example due to off-road accessories, a heavy bumper, a winch or a rooftop tent. A coilover tuned to the increased weight prevents the suspension from sagging too quickly and provides a more stable driving position, both on and off-road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, a coilover upgrade makes sense if you regularly drive technical terrain and want more suspension travel. A longer coilover with a larger stroke gives the wheels more ability to move with the terrain, significantly improving traction and ride comfort on uneven surfaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coilover sizes: how to choose the right length?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The length of a coilover determines the maximum ride height you can achieve with it. Too short a coilover gives insufficient lift; too long a coilover can overload the suspension geometry or hit the body at maximum compression. The right size depends on the desired ride height, suspension travel and vehicle weight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Lensen Products, coilovers are available in lengths from 8 to 18 inches. As a rule of thumb, for a lift of 5 to 8 centimetres, a 10 to 12-inch coilover is usually sufficient. For larger lifts of 10 centimetres and more, opt for a longer version from 14 to 18 inches, depending on the vehicle type and suspension configuration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hydraulic bump stops: why are they important?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One component often overlooked in a coilover upgrade is the bump stop. A standard rubber bump stop is designed to limit the maximum compression of the suspension and prevent hard contacts between body and axle. In off-road use, where the suspension travel is fully utilised on rough terrain, a standard bump stop quickly becomes inadequate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hydraulic bump stop works differently: instead of an abrupt hard stop, it delivers progressively increasing resistance as the suspension rebounds. This provides smoother suspension travel limitation, less chassis stress and more ride comfort on rough terrain. In combinations with a longer coilover and greater suspension travel, a hydraulic bump stop is therefore strongly recommended. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combination with other off-road upgrades<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A coilover upgrade works best as part of a well-thought-out overall setup. Suspension does not stand alone: the combination with the right tyres, a properly tuned steering system and a reliable recovery system ultimately determines how well your vehicle performs off-road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increasing the ride height also changes the geometry of the steering gear. In many cases, after a lift kit, it is necessary to adjust the steering levers or steering gear to prevent bumpsteer. Always have this checked by a specialist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
