You are driving through technical terrain, a wheel loses grip and the vehicle does not move forward. The engine turns, but the power goes to the wheel that has the least resistance, and that is precisely the wheel that is hanging in the air or spinning in the mud. This is the classic problem caused by an open differential, and it is why serious off-road riders opt for a differential lock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An air locker is one of the most effective and popular forms of differential lock for 4\u00d74 use. In this article, we explain what an air locker does, how the system works, when to deploy it and which vehicles it is suitable for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does an open differential do and why is it a problem offroad?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A differential allows the two wheels on an axle to turn at different speeds. This is necessary when cornering, as the outer wheel has to travel a greater distance than the inner wheel. On the road, this works perfectly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem arises as soon as a wheel loses grip. An open differential always sends the force to the wheel with the least resistance. That means: the wheel that spins on or hangs in the air gets all the power. The wheel that does grip gets nothing. The vehicle will not move forward, no matter how hard you accelerate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off-road, this is one of the most common causes of stalling. Even a 4\u00d74 with all-wheel drive can come to a complete standstill if the wrong wheel loses grip because the differential was directing power away from where it is needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is an air locker?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An air locker is a pneumatically driven differential lock that you can activate from the cabin. When the air locker is off, the differential operates normally: the wheels turn independently. As soon as you engage the air locker via a switch or button in the cabin, the differential locks mechanically. Both wheels on the axle then turn at exactly the same speed, regardless of grip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gives direct traction on both wheels at the same time. Even if one wheel is fully suspended in the air, the other wheel turns with full power. The vehicle moves forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actuation of the lock operates via compressed air, hence the name air locker. A small compressor or an existing air system sends air to an actuator in the differential housing, which engages or disengages the lock. Activation is instant, reliable and can be switched on and off while driving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air locker vs. other locking options<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are several ways to lock a differential or improve traction. The most common options besides the air locker are a mechanical locker, an automatic locker and a locking differential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mechanical locker locks the differential permanently or via a manual lever. It is robust and cheap, but offers less comfort on the road as the differential remains locked even on paved surfaces or is difficult to shift while driving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An automatic locker locks and unlocks itself based on driving conditions, without driver intervention. This sounds convenient, but the behaviour is less predictable in technical terrain and road handling can be unsettled by unexpected locking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A limited slip differential distributes power better than an open differential but never locks completely. It is a good compromise for light to moderate off-road use, but offers less traction than a true locker in tough terrain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The air locker combines the best of both worlds: on the road, the vehicle drives with a normal open differential, comfortable and predictable. As soon as you drive into terrain and need traction, you engage the locker and have the maximum mechanical lock available. This is why the air locker is the most popular choice for serious and recreational off-road use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When do you use an air locker?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You only use an air locker in situations where extra traction is needed. On normal roads, you always drive with the locker switched off. A locked differential on paved roads causes extra wear on tyres and driveline parts, reduced steering response and uncomfortable handling when cornering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off-road, you switch on the locker as soon as the situation calls for it: on steep slopes where a wheel is in danger of slipping, in deep mud or sand where the wheels have uneven grip, in rock passages where large diagonal articulation occurs and in water passages where the ground is uneven and wheels may lose grip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many experienced off-road riders drive with the rear locker as the default setting in tough terrain and only engage the front locker when the rear axle fails to come out on its own. The front locker has more influence on the vehicle's steering behaviour and requires more getting used to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For which vehicles is an air locker available?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Air lockers are available for a wide range of popular 4\u00d74 models. The most common applications are the Nissan Patrol Y60 and Y61, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70, 80 and 100 series, the Land Rover Defender and Discovery, the Toyota Hilux Surf and Prado, and various Jeep models. In addition, air lockers are available for a wide range of axles used in custom 4\u00d74 builds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Installation: what's involved?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The installation of an air locker consists of two parts: the mechanical installation of the locker in the differential housing and the construction of the air system. The mechanical installation requires dismantling the differential, replacing the spindle wheel and associated parts with the locker mechanism and readjusting the bearing arrangement. This is precision work best carried out by a specialised workshop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The air system consists of a compressor or a branch of an existing air system, a switch in the cabin and air hoses running to the differential housing via a rotary joint. For vehicles with an existing air system, such as for airsuspension or tyre inflation, this can be included. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After installation, it is important to readjust the differential and check for leaks in the air system. A properly installed air locker will last for decades without maintenance, provided the air system is kept clean and dry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air locker front or back: what do you choose?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For best traction in tough terrain, an air locker on both the front and rear axles is the ideal setup. Many riders start with a rear locker because it has the most impact on traction and the least effect on steering. The rear axle provides most of the traction when driving, and a locked rear axle already gives the desired result in most situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A front locker adds extra traction in extreme situations, but requires some adjustment in driving style. With a locked front axle, the vehicle has less tendency to follow the direction dictated by the steering wheel, as both front wheels turn at equal speed regardless of the steering angle. This requires a calm and deliberate driving style in technical terrain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
