An air locker is only as good as the air system behind it. In this category, part of powertrain & axles, you’ll find 12V compressors and air tanks that reliably power your diff-locks and are also handy for adjusting your tyre pressure to suit the terrain whilst on the move. A complete air system is therefore one of the most versatile upgrades you can add to your 4x4.

Buying a 12V compressor: the motor behind your air lockers

The 12V high-efficiency compressor in this range delivers up to 200 PSI, is quiet in operation and runs on a permanent magnet motor suitable for regular use. Do you drive a air lockers & differentials, a good compressor is not just an accessory but an essential requirement: without sufficient air pressure and flow rate, your locker will respond sluggishly or fail to engage at all just when you need it most. What’s more, its quiet operation makes this compressor a pleasure to use, even if you switch it on frequently whilst out riding.

Buying an air tank: a buffer for immediate response

Next to the compressor, you’ll find a 3-gallon (11.3-litre) aluminium air tank, seamlessly constructed with 1/4"-NPT connections and complete with fitting materials. This tank acts as a buffer: instead of waiting for the compressor to build up sufficient pressure, you can engage your locker immediately using the air already in the tank. For those who regularly need to switch quickly between locked and unlocked modes, this is a valuable addition to the system, particularly on varied terrain where you frequently switch between traction modes.

Adjusting tyre pressure whilst on the move with your 4x4 air suspension system

A compressor isn’t just useful for your air lockers. When you’re on the road, you can use the same system to inflate your tyres deflate them for better grip on soft ground, and pump them up again as soon as you’re back on the tarmac. Combine this with the right kit from recovery & winches and you’ll be well prepared for anything, even if the terrain is tricky or you get stuck unexpectedly.

Fitting the compressor and air system correctly

A compressor and air tank should be securely fitted in the correct position, away from heat and dirt, and with hoses that cannot rub against anything. For the necessary fitting materials and tools to get this right first time, take a look at workshop & assembly. This ensures that your air system remains just as reliable as the rest of your powertrain, even after years of intensive use.

Choosing a compressor for your 4x4

With an on-board compressor, you can adjust your tyre pressure to suit the terrain: lower for better grip in sand or mud, higher for the return journey on the motorway. A compressor is also essential if you use air lockers. When choosing one, pay attention to the output in litres per minute and whether you need a standalone compressor or one with an air tank.

Are you unsure which compressor or air tank is right for your air lockers and 4x4 project? Our team will be happy to advise you, so that your system always has sufficient capacity, even under heavy loads.
